'RCBrews' Clipson relaxes outside the Brasserie de la Bourse on a recent
trip to Brussels. In his hand is a Westmalle Trappist Tripel weighing
in at 9% ABV. As you can see, it was served in the appropriate
glassware complete with Westmalle logo. The Westmalle Tripel is a hazy
(slightly cloudy) amber color with a honey-like fruity aroma and a sweet
malt flavor that is very smooth with a long finish.
The Trappist abbey of Westmalle, in the province of Antwerp, was the first of today's generation to brew, but initially produced beer only for the consumption of its own brothers. It started to sell its beer in its own village in 1872, but did not operate on a commercial scale until 1920. Although this beer has been sold to the public for more than 100 years, and is very well known, Westmalle goes about its business quietly. |
